  Dolphin Watching

The south coast of Sri Lanka is one of the best places in the world to go whale and dolphin watching as you can witness varieties of marine species including blue whales, sperm whales and spinner dolphins. With an average sighting of 4.5 per a day, the Blue Whale is the most amazing sea creature found in Sri Lankan waters. Blue Whales are the largest known marine mammal to have ever existed. This gigantic, long and docile creature is equivalent to the weight of 50 elephants. You can find blue whales in several shades of bluish- grey. As a result of whaling, the blue whale has become an endangered animal worldwide. According to Dr. Charles Anderson, famous British Biologist, the blue whales in the Indian Ocean are mostly seasonal migrants on the way to their feeding grounds in the Arabian Sea. For anyone who is interested in whale watching in Sri Lanka, September to April is believed to be the ideal season. Sperm Whales or "teeth whales" which can be seen further offshore are believed to be the deepest diving whales reaching unknown depths in the ocean. The exceptional feature of these whales in the Indian Ocean is their sharp lower jaw teeth.
